AI impression

AI impression · Impression in an AI surface

An AI impression is the display of a URL in a Google AI surface, counted in Search Console with no distinction between AI Overviews and AI Mode. It is a visibility measure, not a click measure: the report provides no CTR or queries so far.

How is an AI impression counted?

According to Google, the report measures how often a site’s URLs appear in the AI features of Search and Discover. The data is also still counted in the overall performance report, so it is not lost from the history.

What should you do with this data?

Compare it with the page’s organic position: a page that is very present in AI surfaces but losing clicks signals visibility without traffic. Track by page, country and device, then prioritize content to enrich or make more citable.

What are the limits?

No distinction between AI Overviews and AI Mode, no clicks, no queries, scope limited to Google. An impression does not say whether the link was seen or clicked. Cross-check with Bing citations and a share of voice measured over a set of prompts.
