How do AI Overviews work?

Google generates a summary from pages it retrieves to ground the model’s answer. The US antitrust ruling describes a proprietary technology, FastSearch, used to ground Gemini models. Search Engine Journal links it to AI Overviews and draws a debate about the role of links in source selection.

How do you get included in AI Overviews?

According to Google’s documentation, there is no additional technical requirement: the page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. SEO fundamentals therefore remain the entry condition. For the citation itself, sections that answer a question directly under an explicit heading are easier to extract.

How do you measure the impact of AI Overviews?

Search Console’s generative AI report measures impressions. For traffic, cross-check this data with CTR changes on the affected queries in the classic performance report.

Frequently asked questions

Were AI Overviews called SGE?

Yes. The Search Generative Experience was the experimental version that became AI Overviews.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove a site from AI Overviews?

No. Google-Extended controls the use of content for Gemini training, not display in Search. To limit the snippet, use nosnippet or max-snippet.

Is specific markup required?

Google says no specific markup is required. Structured data remains useful if it matches the visible content.
