Where does the term GEO come from?
The term was formalized in the paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” (Aggarwal et al., 2023, arXiv 2311.09735), which tested content optimization methods and reported visibility gains of up to 40% in generative engine answers. These results come from test environments, not Google’s production systems.
Is GEO different from SEO?
The foundations are shared: useful content, crawlability, authority. GEO adds its own goals: being extracted by passage, being identified as an entity, being cited with a link. Content that answers clearly, is structured by questions and is backed by data serves both. Hence the line “Good GEO is good SEO”.
How do you measure GEO?
By share of citations over a set of prompts (AI share of voice), by real citations when an engine exposes them (Bing AI Performance), by impressions in Search Console for Google and by server logs for AI bot visits.
