I told you about it in June when Google confirmed thearrival. This time, this nis more of a confirmation. Cis online. Test a query from Paris, you will see.

tl;dr

  • Effective launch on July 22, 2026, announced by Elizabeth Reid (VP Search Google) on LinkedIn
  • The official calendar given to publishers on June 29 spoke from September 23 at the latest: Google Grids its own two-month deadline
  • The Toggle Search Console to exclude its domain from AI Overviews andthe mode was documented on July 20, 48 hours before launch
  • This toggle is binary, at the domain level only: the control page by page nnot arrive before March 2027
  • France joins a market where German data show a CTR in position 1 that falls from 27% to 11% when an AI Overview sposter
  • e-commerce transactional queries remain little affected (3 to 4% triggering), informational requests (health, finance, travel, B2B SaaS) cash the most

what sHappened on July 22

Google has uploaded AI Overviews and Fashion in France todaytoday, on desktop, mobile and lGoogle app. lannouncement came fromElizabeth Reid, Vice President Search at Google, via a LinkedIn post. She describes the two functionalities as a means of dealing with the collection and synthesis work ofinformation, that theUser wants a quick response or a longer conversational exchange.

Important point: availability follows the physical location of theuser, not the country associated with the Google account. A Paris-based tester saw nothing untilSee you yesterday. The same tester from Madrid had seen the AI Overviews since March 2025.

France was the last major market inEurope of theWest without these features. They have been running since May 2024 in the United States, and since March 26, 2025 in nine other European countries (Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Italy, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland). France had remained outside this lot, a status confirmed not by an official Google communication, but by the testimonies accumulated on its own forumsHelp: A thread opened on May 21, 2026 on the disappearance of AI Overviews during a trip to France, locked after confirmation by two Product Experts that the functionality was blocked for regional reasons, and marked as relevant by 68 other users before its closure.

why cis a surprise: the announced calendar spoke of September

On June 29, 2026, Google sent a letter to French press publishers announcing a launch in thesummer, with a maximum deadline on September 23, 2026. This date was taken over by Ouest-France, then Les Échos and Le Monde. Three commitments accompanied this letter: a right of withdrawal for publishers, separate metrics between classic research and AI research, and the maintenance of remuneration for neighboring rights.

July 22 therefore falls two months before themaximum deadline communicated. Nothing in the post dElizabeth Reid nexplains this acceleration. No official source links this timing to a specific regulatory event, but the context is busy: five days earlier, July 17, 2026,French Competition Authority published its opinion n°26-A-05 on the concentration of the AI agents, pointing out thatOpenAI, Google and Anthropic control over 84% of this market. A timing coincidence, not demonstrated causality.

The detail that matters: The Toggle Search Console arrived 48 hours before

On July 20, 2026, two days before the French launch, Google published the Search Console documentationA control allowing site owners to release their domain from AI Overviews andthe mode. This control existed in test since June 2026, it becomes official.

What this toggle does concretely:

  • It is located in Search Console, under Settings, section IA Generative in search
  • The choice is binary by property: include or exclude its links and content from generative features
  • Include is the default on all properties
  • Excluded content disappears within 1 to 2 days, the cache and propagation can extend this delay
  • the N settingis not a ranking signal and does not modify positions in classic search

What this toggle doesn’t do:

  • It acts at the domain level, not the page or the directory
  • he ndon’t prevent theModel training, which remains managed by the Google-Extended token in the robots.txt
  • it does not remove the contents of theindex, which always requires a noindex directive

page by page control, the one that would allowExclude a generic product page while leaving a page danalysis eligible for citation, nwill not arrive before March 3, 2027. This date comes fromAn obligation imposed by the British regulator CMA (Competition and Markets Authority), which forced Google on June 3, 2026 to give publishers a right of withdrawal, with nine months oftechnical implementation granted by the regulator. The substantial obligations of this same decision take legal force on December 3, 2026. In other words: the control that Reid presents as proof of goodwill from Google was born da UK regulatory obligation, nota voluntary product initiative, and it does notexists todaytoday only for some of the site owners.

Impact of AI Overviews / AI Mode in France.

None of these datawas produced in France. search behavior, language and mix dFrench publishers do not transpose mechanically from theGerman or LEnglish. but they fix theorder of magnitude of what happens.

SourceMarket / MethodMeasured result
sistrixGermany, more than 100m of keywordsCTR in position 1: 27% to 11% when an AI Overview SPoster, 265M of organic clicks lost per month, average loss of 6.6% all keywords combined
ahrefs300,000 keywords, April 2025 then follow-up February 2026Average click loss on the first organic link: 34.5% in April 2025, up to58% on top ranked pages in 2026
Randomized study (Indian School of Business, Carnegie Mellon)1,065 Chrome Desktop UsersOutgoing clicks down 39.8%, clickless searches up 34.5%, no measurable change on perceived satisfaction
Case All About Berlin (Independent Guide, Germany)Individual case study70% loss of search traffic after launching AI Overviews in its market

The detail that matters to prioritize: in the markets already covered, e-commerce transactional queries (purchase, price, comparison) only trigger an AI Overview in 3 to 4% of cases, with Google having an interest in letting traffic slip to the merchants. It is the informational requests, health, finance, travel, education and B2B SaaS in the lead, which cash the most. If your portfolio of pages is predominantly informational, topic nis more theoretical fromtodaytoday.

the French regulatory context, heavier thansomewhere else

France was left out of the European rollout of March 2025 for a specific reason: its regime of neighboring rights is stricter than the base set by the European directive on the right toauthor of 2019, andFrench Competition Authority was the most active regulator ofEurope on publishers’ remuneration. it had fined 250 millionEuros to Google in March 2024 for non-compliance withcommitments made on licensing agreements with French publishers. More recently, this same regulator ordered META to negotiate with publishers within 15 days, in an interim decision.

The pattern is constant: France transforms structural disputes over the law ofAuthor in firm compliance deadlines. No French court or regulatoragain decided on the basic question, namely if a summary generated by AI which synthesizes content (rather than reproduce it as is) falls under the regime of neighboring rights. This decision, when it comes, will weigh more heavily on theFrench market economy that nwhat setting is produced.

What to do now

  1. check theAccess to Toggle Search Console. Settings > Generative in search. Decide include/exclude by property according to your exposure, knowing that the setting is all or nothing for theMoment.
  2. Isolate AI prints. Search Console’s dedicated IA report (launched on June 3, 2026) filters by country. Without this filter, AI Overview and Mode prints drown in the overall performance report. I detail the complete method in My article on the Generative Search Console report, with my own Aioseo.fr figures as an example.
  3. Audit the wallet by intent. Priority to informational pages (health, finance, travel, education, B2B SaaS). E-commerce transactional pages can wait, they are statistically less exposed.
  4. Install a before/after baseline todaytoday. Any year-to-year comparison that crosses on July 22, 2026 will contain a structural break. Compare the coming weeks to the past weeks without isolating theEffect AI will distort your position and traffic readings.
  5. Prioritize citability, not just position. Being in position 1 is no longer enough if you nare not the source cited in the generated summary. I detail the concrete levers in my article on Position tracking in IA mode and AI Overviews and on the query fan-out that structures these answers.
  6. Do not bet everything on the current toggle. The page by page control arrives in March 2027. The domain setting dtodayHui is a transition solution, not the final solution.

Limitations

The traffic loss figures quoted here come fromGermany, United States andA randomized study on Chrome Desktop users, no French data. language, research habits and mix deditors differ. These are orders of magnitude to frame theWaiting, not an encrypted forecast for your site. The only reliable data on your own exposure will be the one you will measure in Search Console in the coming weeks.

To go forward

The balance of power changes sides todaytoday, not in two months. Those who have already restructured their content and worked on their citability leave with a length ofAdvance. The others discover the new French SERP at the same time as the drop in traffic.
