Agentic commerce

Agentic commerce · AI agent shopping

Agentic commerce is a purchase made by an AI agent on behalf of a user, from finding the product to paying for it. The agent compares, chooses and orders from machine-readable data, so price, stock and availability must be exposed in plain HTML and in structured data.

How does agentic commerce work?

The user states a goal, for example “find me a carry-on suitcase under 150 euros”. The agent queries catalogs, compares offers, checks stock, then triggers payment through a standardized protocol. Two standards compete: the Agentic Commerce Protocol from OpenAI and Stripe, tied to Instant Checkout in ChatGPT since September 2025, and Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), presented on January 11, 2026 at NRF with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart.

With UCP, the merchant remains the merchant of record. What changes is the interface: the agent replaces the product page as the decision point.

Why does agentic commerce matter for SEO?

An agent does not read a sales pitch, it reads attributes. A price missing from the initial HTML, a stock level shown in JavaScript or an unmarked variant makes the product hard to compare. Visibility depends first on the quality of the product feed and markup, then on editorial content.

According to Salt.agency’s analysis, access to Google’s agentic surfaces remains conditioned on existing Merchant Center requirements.

What should an e-commerce site prepare?

Four workstreams: price, stock and availability rendered in server-side HTML; valid Product and Offer data aligned with visible content; an up-to-date Merchant Center feed; explicit shipping and return terms. None of this is new, but an agent uses it with zero tolerance for error.

Frequently asked questions

Does agentic commerce replace product SEO?

No, it moves it. Product pages remain the data source, but agents read them. Markup and feed quality come before copywriting.

Should I implement UCP now?

Not necessarily. According to trade press, Shopify handles the integration from its admin. On a custom site, start with clean product data before tackling the protocol.

Who controls the checkout?

With UCP, the merchant stays the merchant of record, but the agent drives the buying experience. The trade-off is reach against control of the interface.
