Google AI Mode, what is it ?
AI Mode. This is the new experience conversational and multimodal Google.
She just sto add to the AI Overviews and the Web Guide, but do not be deceived : cis the big piece. We talk about the future of the SERPS, neither more nor less.
Google AI Mode : soon to be the default mode on Google
Google has hinted several times that thisis not an option, and that the mode I may be destined to become the default mode.

Then, we stop beating around the bush. It is necessary to understand how this tech works, and especially how you are tracking its visibility on it. Because the rule does not change : it is nobetter than whatwe measure
How does Google AI mode work ?
The mode AI uses Gemini + Query Fan Out + Reciprocal Ranking Fusion (RRF).
PS : I would like to note that some SEO as Metehan Yesilyurt have demonstrated that ChatGPT uses the Reciprocal Ranking Merger or RRF. But wehave no confirmation that I mode lalso uses…
Processing steps
- Analysis query : Gemini breaks down the query in 3-10 sub-questions intent-driven. For a query like the following : “comparison iPhone vs Galaxy”, you will as sub-queries : price, specs, reviews Reddit, benchmarks). You can simulate the sub-queries for a given query with the tools query fan out
- Parallel searches : Gemini launches 20-50 sub-concurrent queries on the web, news, products, forums (Reddit/Quora prioritized), images/videos.
- Synthesis & reasoning : after classification of the responses, Gemini, assembles the data in structured response (text, tables, graphs auto-generated, embeds video) with citations inline.
How to know its position on ai mode ?
There is not yet a tool to find out exactly where you stand in the AI Mode to Google. The answers of Gemini don’t follow the ranking, classic, so no position #1 to check as before.
But all is not lost ! There are still ways to have a little bit of visibility :
Track your position Google AI mode with Google Search Console

At the time I write this article, I’m really starting to think that Google Search Console will soon offer a section dedicated to the AI.
Especially after all the new features AI announced at the Google Search Central to Zurich !
It would be best for us, SEO, to be able to follow separately the visibility of our content in the AI Mode and HAVE Overviews, rather than the data’s classic the SERPS.
Such a feature would be, according to some clues and whispers in the mid-SEO, not so far away !
In a recent tweet, John Mueller said that “this is not here yet”.
He has never said that it was not planned. At Google, this grade is rarely trivial.

We note also the appearance of queries long tail in Search Console, which suggests that Google is preparing something to better follow the AI.
On Twitter, one user shared a screenshot with queries that are long enough, which seems to show a query LLM directly in its Search Console.
It is fascinating to see what might look like the data AI “in real life” and how they begin to appear for certain sites.

Methane.I, the SEO behind the theory of the RRF in GPT, has also shared screenshots of Search Console in this direction.

Methane.ai is not the only one going in that direction.
Jérôme Salomon, SEO technique in Oncrawl, has recently published a post on LinkedIn is particularly interesting in several respects.
He explains thata portion of the queries generated by ChatGPT (via the query fan-out) and leaves traces indirect in Google Search Console, because ChatGPT pass by SerpAPI and Google, which generates impressions without clicks on queries that are not human, and allows a degree of traceability..

Recognize the queries AI mode / Ai Overviews / Chatgpt in Google Search Console
1. Metric abnormal
- Lot of impressions
- 0 or almost 0 click
- Average Positions “absurd” (20-100)
2. Linguistic characteristics
Queries that do not look like humans :
- very long (10+ words),
- complete sentences
- multi-intentions,
- additions artificial :
- year
- location
- “best / top / reviews / comparison”.
Edward Sturm, I like a good quote, in turn, proposed a small tip — not very scientific, of course (lol) — but that seems to work on some sites : search queries starting with “I am”, often indicative of a user submitting a query directly into a LLM.
So yes, why not.
Regex to know the AI queries on Google Search Console
To retrieve these queries, SEO in question have used Regex.
So yes, I know, this is not 100% reliable. And there is no evidence that these are truly queries AI Mode : it could very well be just a long-running query classic.
Anyway, one thing is for sure : Google provides, willy-nilly, to propose a solution to track requests LLM / AI Mode in Search Console.
If you are curious and you want to test on your Search Console, here is the regex proposed in the articles that I’ve seen on the subject :
^\S+\s+\S+\s+\S+\s+\S+.*$

PPS : don’t forget that AI Mode and HAVE Overviews are not yet available in France. It is said that it happens, but nothing is gained… so not the fire to choose a tool all on.
My opinion on tracking positions of AI Mode and AI Overviews
I’ve never hidden my preference for Search Console as a SEO tool. The other tools have clearly evolved over time, but there is nothing to equal the data directly from Google. On my side, so I wait, especially as the follow-up to I-Mode arrives in Search Console. As I said earlier, all of the indicators suggest that it happens soon. I almost want to say that it is inevitable(for those who know the reference) …
